Disaster Youth Summit 2006 - 2007
Natural Disaster Youth Summit 2007
Description
of project:
This
is a project in which children will learn the importance of
human lives and how to cope with the effect of natural disasters
such as Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions, Wildfires, Floods,
Hurricanes, Landslides, Tsunamis, Droughts and so on through
the collaboration with global friends. This year, the project
will focus on the relationship between natural disasters and
environmental problems such as the problems with water. Our
ultimate goal is to create a safer place to live in for everyone
in this planet.
To achieve this goal, students will create the Disaster Safety
Map of their schools surrounding areas. These maps will be put
together our website and will become 'The Global Disaster Safety
Map'. The maps will also be exhibited at the NDYS 2007 conference
in Nagoya, Japan on 3rd to 5th of May, 2007. The project NDYS
will continue; NDYS 2008 International Conference will be held
in Trinidad and Tobago.
Project
Details:
Natural
Disasters occurred many places in the past and will occur in
the future. We realize the fear of natural disasters. We learned
the importance of human lives, the importance of cooperation,
collaboration and preparedness.
By preparing for the natural activities of the earth, we can
limit the extent of human suffering. Moreover, in some cases,
we may eliminate the future suffering by studying about the
disasters. This is what we have learned through NDYS 2005 and
2006.
Through this project, we aim to empower youth globally and raise
their awareness of natural disasters in order to reduce the
consequences of future natural disasters. Our goal is to enhance
awareness of natural disasters to families, schools and local
communities around the world. To achieve this goal, students
have discussion on the forum, collaborate and make a disaster
safety maps.
As a subsidiary program, the NDYS Teddy Bears (NDYS Little Ambassadors)
will be exchanged among partner schools to strengthen the friendly
bond. Through this project, we expect students to grow as NDYS
Ambassadors who share their knowledge of disaster management
and tell
people the importance of preparedness for the future risk. Thus,
the contents of what students learned at the youth summit will
be disseminated to the local community where students live.
Their schools will be the center of community education for
disaster management. We also expect teachers and civic volunteers
to support students' with learning and activities.
NDYS will build a global disaster management education network
utilizing Information and Communications Technology (ICT). As
the final event of the project, we will get together in Nagoya,
Aichi, Japan and hold the International Conference ' NDYS 2007
in Aichi'.
